Global community of recyclers and composters

Article Abstract:

Recycling and composting are receiving worldwide attention as countries concentrate on developing and implementing projects, policies and research involving waste management. Germany, Switzerland, Luxemburg and Austria have ventured into dealing with organic waste by separating it from household refuse and then composting. Nigeria has also improved on managing recyclables as well as provided effective ways of collecting and disposing refuse. Other countries such as Germany has implemented regulations on limiting packaging waste and holds the private sector responsible for recycling the package after use.

Keeping ahead of the curve

Article Abstract:

Composting and recycling techniques have become more cost-effective due to innovation. Vermicomposting is gaining popularity in places such as Cuba, India, Australia, and New Zealand. The use of leachate in compost shows 65% cost savings as compared to the usual treatment of landfill leachate. Application of composting knowledge to landfill diversion may provide important solutions to metropolitan waste disposal. A New York City task force of federal, state, and city officials is drawing up an action plan to transport garbage to other states and increase recycling in the city.

Composters build strong links to California farms

Article Abstract:

Sun-Land Garden Products of Watsonville, California, supplies compost to conventional and organic growers. It began a project with the Monterey Regional Waste Management District (MRWMD) in 1986 to divert spent mushroom substrate, and they have continued to develop separating, processing and composting of green materials. This led to the creation of the Green Material Standardized Composting Facility, and feedstocks include yard trimmings, agricultural residues, livestock manure and cannery waste.
