New York city schools build gardens and composting systems

Article Abstract:

New York, NY, schools have built gardens in open spaces created by demolished buildings. The use of composting provided the soil. Heat given out during the composting process warms up greenhouses used for seedling production. The composting projects give students a hands-on experience with science. The students and staff of a non-profit organization have designed a three ft by three ft compost box called Hot Box and have applied for a patent for the same.

Green landscaping program makes business sense

Cities in the San Francisco Bay Area of California have added special standards for landscapers to their Green Business Programs, leading them to adopt best management practices to increase organic recycling, conserve more water and energy, while reducing solid waste. The program's goal is to recognize and assist businesses in implementing sound environmental practices.

Increasing government purchase of compost products

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on the use of privately produced compost in public works, using the city of San Jose, California, as an example. City officials purchase compost for remediation and maintenance of grassy recreation areas such as soccer fields.
