Gaining public acceptance for beneficial use of biosolids

Article Abstract:

The use of biosolids has been in place since the 1970s but it was only in 1995 that the practice gained considerable attention due to development of successful models for biosolids projects. The new models present effective solutions to problems associated with the use of biosolids such as contamination of air and water and the risks to human health and the environment. Some states that adopted the models have also created laws regulating the use and disposal of biosolids to improve public perception of biosolids use.

Small communities, small scale composting

Article Abstract:

Low cost, low technology compostinghave been used to develop a long term sludge management program in two densely populated communities in New York. The villages of Lawrence and Cedarhurst maintain the only facilities that are beneficially reusing sludge in Long Island, and they are not recievng any odor complaints. Resulting products from both facilities are used in local public works projects or are marketed to a large scale top-soil manufacturer.
