Beneficial use of paper mill sludge

Article Abstract:

New York State has 54 paper mills, the largest number of any state in the US, and steps are being taken to make recycling use of paper mill sludge within the state. Paper mill sludge is most frequently used for landfills, but there are other uses including soil substitutes, animal bedding, composting feedstock, and construction material. In addition, research is being pursued to develop addition recycling technologies for the sludge.

Sludge composting takes town out of the landfill

Article Abstract:

The high costs of landfill disposal at the Massachusetts area in 1989 prompted the city of Holyoke, MA to search for a less expensive but efficient way of sludge management. Holyoke contracted J.F. Partyka Inc to build a composting plant in Jul 1991 that produces compost adhering to strict regional standards. Odor and moisture control problems have arisen, but plant operators are devising ways to meet these challenges.
