Getting down to business

Article Abstract:

The Paper Recycling 2000 held in Atlanta, GA, in June was highlighted by discussions regarding challenges facing the paper recycling industry. Among these challenges are searching for secondary fiber sources, coping with technological changes and retaining employees. Other equally interesting topics covered at the show include, transportation issues, electronic commerce and global markets. Several new and innovative paper recycling machineries were also displayed at the show.

Article Abstract:

Georgia-Pacific Corp (G-P) has implemented adjustments, acquisitions and attempted novel approaches in its effort to become a part of the forest products industry's recycling involvement. In addition to environmental considerations, the company's involment in recycling is due to economic reasons, according to Victor Gaylor, G-P's director of recycling operations. Gaylor believes that market forces instead of government programs should fuel advancements in paper recycling.

Hoping for the best..

Article Abstract:

Recyclers and scrap metal processors had a difficult year in 1998 because of a combination of low commodity prices and the Asian economic crisis. As the year comes to a close, the industry is hoping for signs of an incipient recovery. Realists, however, are resigned to the fact that the depressed market conditions, coupled with low demand abroad, are likely to carry on into 1999.
