Article Abstract:

An analysis of different materials and determination of the initial compost mix-ratio is the first step in composting. The carbon to nitrogen ratio (C:N), pH levels, moisture and volatile solid content, and other environmental factors determine the growth rate and degree of activity of microflora. The activity of microflora determines the quality of compost. The feedstocks to be used for composting are made to undergo specific tests. Generally the C:N ratio should be 20:1 or 30:1, but the composting system works well outside this range as well.

Article Abstract:

Alameda County, CA, has implemented a bay-based cocollection program to encourage the local populace to actively participate in collecting wastes, thereby aiding the enhancement of local waste diversion rates. Collected wastes are recycled after sorting in the local materials recovery facility. Funding for such recycling and market development programs is obtained through the mandatory landfill surcharge on the local populace.
