Grassroots recovery: collecting recyclables in Nigeria

Article Abstract:

The oil boom, waste generation and disposal methods has eroded the Nigerian traditions of hygienic, collection, disposal and storage of waste materials. However, the realization of the value of recyclables restored the Nigerian attitude towards management of refuse. A survey conducted among garbage collectors show that the entrepreneurship towards waste recycling was motivated by the prospect of economic gain. Most of the refuse come from organic waste and people who collect recyclables from the dump site are mostly males aged nine to fifteen years old.
