International pollution problems: unilateral initiatives by environmental groups in one country

Article Abstract:

Environmental groups in a country plays an essential role in addressing international pollution problems. Higher total emissions may result from unilateral initiatives to decrease emissions, which is supported by environmental groups. Total emissions with cooperation is usually lower than the total emissions without cooperation under a static approach. In comparison, within a dynamic framework, suitable unilateral initiatives by the environmental groups in one country can produce a stock of pollution lower than the cooperative equilibrium.

The political economy of pollution taxes in a small open economy

Article Abstract:

A two-stage extensive form game model has been used to analyze the nature and effects of pollution tax policy under a small open economy. By extending the model to pollution abatement, it was revealed that under political equilibrium, pollution abatement subsidy poses adverse implications to the level of pollution. Further, it was established that the presence of lobby group members and elasticity of pollution taxes in a political equilibrium distinguishes a pollution equilibrium tax rate from the Pigouvian rate.
