Keeping your eye on the prize

Article Abstract:

'The State of Garbage in America' survey conducted for the annual issue of 'Biocycle' shows that there has been continuous progress in the recycling and composting of solid waste materials. In 1988 there were only 1042 curbside recycling programs and 651 composting yard sites, but by 1992 the number of curbside recycling programs had increased to 5404 and composting yards to 2981. Though the survey shows progress in the recycling and composting programs which will be a foundation for the future, it also reveals that the national recycling infrastructure is yet to be established.

Steady climb for biosolids composting

Article Abstract:

The 1996 Biocycle survey shows an increase in the number of biosolid composting projects from 330 in 1995 to 338 in 1996. Of the 43 states surveyed, 33 reported an increase in the effective use of biosolids. Weather freezing, odor control, compost marketing, and maintenance of desired moisture content are some of the major challenges which operators of biosolid composting facilities faced. Data about the biosolid quality and type, and bulking materials utilized by the aerated static pile method, windrow method and in-vessel method is provided.

Biosolids composting maintains steady growth

Article Abstract:

Biosolids composting has been established as a standard option as a strategy for solid waste management in 1995. According to a survey, the biosolid composting program was under development in more than 55 states. By region, the Mid-Atlantic states had the largest number of projects, with California hosting 21 of the 330 total projects. However, other states had significant decreases for the past five years, particularly Massachusetts and Florida.
