Land use externalities: mechanism design for the allocation of environmental resources

Article Abstract:

An updated version of the Groves mechanism is shown to be applicable to the attainment of a socially optimal allocation of land use. The finite amount of available land and the hesitation of environmentalists to employ monetary valuation techniques are limiting but can be dealt with appropriately if the forest industry can explain the rate of substitutability between intensive and non-intensive forestry, and if the environmentalists can account for their valuation of a land use allocation in an equivalent single use.

Environmental cleanliness as a public good: welfare and policy implications of nonconvex preferences

Article Abstract:

The U.S. government can greatly improve environmental cleanliness by establishing a high standard precedent, even if such a program runs at a high cost initially. By raising standards, the government can motivate individuals to become more active keeping the environment clean, as one piece of litter in a pristine area is less tolerable than in a more littered one.
