Making your own market

Article Abstract:

Goodwill Industries of America Inc teamed up with Lee County, FL, to solve the problem of not having buyers for the recycled clear HDPE. With the use of the materials recovery facilities of Lee County, Goodwill proposed the pilot project of manufacturing landscape timber, dock posts and car stops out of collected HDPE. The pilot would be financed by Lee County and operated by Goodwill. Lee County would receive 75% of the quarterly profits but is obliged to buy part of the products. Goodwill gets 25% and takes care of operating losses. Despite some minor problems, a potential market was created and realized.

Pallet scraps yield mulch and compost

Article Abstract:

Wood Recycle and Composting Center used to be a minor operation at Kansas Pallet and Transfer, a company which repairs and resells used pallets. When Dean Frankenberry took over in 1993, he started a mulch production unit from pallet scraps which became the forerunner of Wood Recycle which later became the major operation at the firm. Wood Recycle also offers waste processing services for yard scraps and trimmings. There are plans to convert up to 90% of the yard scraps to compost.

Tree trimmings boost a mulch business

Article Abstract:

Rainbow Farms in Monee, IL, reached an agreement in 1997 with regional electricity provider ComEd to hold exclusive rights to all the chipped tree trimming scraps produced by ComEd tree trimming subcontractors in the Chicago, IL, area. There are now 24 transfer stations where the chipped woody material from the subcontractors can be dumped. In 1997, 70,000 cubic yards of tree trimmings were processed, producing around 50,000 cubic yards of commercial grade mulch.
