Master composters reap results

Article Abstract:

Master Composters training programs are employed in Southeastern Oakland County, MI, and in Essex County/Windsor, Ontario. The programs aim to reach out to and educate people ways to lessen refuse being brought to dumpsites. Home composting, leaving mown grass on the lawn and using natural mulches are three methods introduced by Master Composters to community members. A locally based recovery authority and waste management committee reach out to people through demonstrations and portable display booths.

Analysis of a collection shift

Article Abstract:

Philadelphia reduced its weekly collection for recycling to biweekly as the costs for weekly collection were high. A comparative study of the effects of reducing the frequency of collection on public participation revealed that biweekly collection brought down the participation from 70% to 40%, while the weight of the collection increased from 10 pounds to 20 pounds. Climatic conditions influenced the participation and the quantity, as did the exclusion of plastics from the collection.

Intensive recycling in an urban setting

Article Abstract:

Recycling programs are generally more successful in suburban rather than in urban areas. To remedy the problems of urban waste recycling, different programs have been introduced in New York City. An intensive recycling zone has been set. Curbside collection of different types of garbage is also being practiced. Public education through outreach programs is being utilized to increase public participation. The viability of each program is maintained by conducting evaluative surveys.
