Measuring generation of food residuals

Article Abstract:

The Commercial Food Waste Composting Demonstration Project, funded by the Washington Department of Ecology, tested the viability of composting commercial organics. The study started in 1992 with the objective of finding the best process for managing food residuals while maximizing usefulness and minimizing the expenditure. The study revealed that food residuals are 25 percent of the waste disposed by the commercial sector. This figure is bigger than earlier estimates by previous studies.

Digesters, classes and waste audits

Article Abstract:

Many schools in Washington are actively involved in recycling programs and some schools such as Mount Baker have started a separate food waste composting program, with each faculty dealing with a different aspect. The school has its own digester, made and monitored by the students. Students are involved in auditing, processing and recycling and are encouraged to suggest solutions to the problems of high waste stream composition, the recovery of recyclables and reducing waste.
