Anaerobic digestion at dairy farms

Article Abstract:

Cal Poly Dairy in California, is using a lagoon-based system to deal with dairy manure. The dairy is located next to the campus of the California Polytechnic State University and has a population of more than 350 cattle, including calves and heifers. Two lagoons are in use, one used for methane recovery, and the other for storage. The lagoon digester is forecast to produce between 20 kW and 25 kW methane. operating continuously, from the existing population level of cattle.

An anaerobic digester for energy production, odour control and soil enrichment has been installed for the dairy feed crops grown on the 900 acres controlled by Haubenschild Farm Inc. in Princeton, MN. This project is one of 13 charter demonstration farms in the AgSTar programme.
