Mixing it up: MRF designs around single stream recycling

Article Abstract:

The value of recycling depends greatly on the extent of sorting among the waste materials as well as the quantity of materials being processed. The former requirement entails the tiresome separation of paper wastes from food and beverage containers. However, technological innovations have made possible the processing of mixed waste. These mechanical sorting systems need vast amounts of refuse so as to make them economically profitable. The growing trend of regionalized waste management programs augers well for this format.
