North Carolina County institutes sticker system

Article Abstract:

Households in Craven County, NC, are required to attach stickers purchased at $1.25 each to every 33-gallon bag of garbage that they put out for pick-up. The system, aimed at encouraging cutback on solid waste, has pushed participation rates in recycling programs from 30% to over 70% and is expected to dramatically increase the volume of collected recyclables. The program came in the wake of pressures from state laws requiring a 25% waste reduction by 1993 and 40% by 2001. Also, certain types of waste, such as big appliances, tires, lead acid batteries are banned from sanitary landfills.

Reining in the stereotype

Article Abstract:

An article in the 'Wall Street Journal' by Asra Q. Nomani entitled 'Reining in the Decorator' revealed the author's bias against interior designers. In it, Nomani portrayed the client as victim and interchangeably used the terms interior designer and decorator. The author also declared that decorators were intimidating, goes beyond the allocated budget and goes overboard. What the author failed to state was that clients are proactive and collaborate with interior decorators. Nomani also failed to say that the credentials of interior designers are provided by legislation.
