Odor and air management strategy for biosolids composting

Article Abstract:

A research demonstration project was conducted at the Los Angeles County Sanitation District's (LACSD) wastewater treatment plant from 1987-1990. The experiments led to the development of a unique air recirculation system for treating compost gases to remove heat, dust, moisture and ammonia. The LACSD does not intend to return to any type of on-site biosolids composting to the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant. Other municipal agencies can avail of LACSD's air management/odor control technology.

Hard earned lessons on odor management

Article Abstract:

The Temple-Belton Regional Sewerage System produces about 3.5 dry tons of biosolids per day. Due to odor complaints in the early 1990s, the facility embarked on improving its composting operation by identifying odor sources such as the aerobic digesters. The operator also learned how to use Drager tubes to identify potential odor sources. A big part of the initiative was education not only of management and staff but also of customers and the public.
