Composting fish and paper pulp residuals

Article Abstract:

Fish caught in Lake Ontario have high levels of toxic residuals such as polychlorinated biphenyl and the Department of Health advises against eating them. Oswego County, New York, has been using paper pulp residuals to compost fish since 1993 and, in 1995, the county's Division of Solid Waste began a pilot project to compost salmon and other fish. The project's aim was to show that fish and paper can be composted together and to assess the usefulness of paper pulp in compost. The method is simple and uses pungent, toxic fish waste which could otherwise pollute the local environment.

Farmer finds composting niche

Article Abstract:

Wes Kinney is the owner of Knox Ridge Holstein Farm, a former dairy farm which has since shifted to composting as its main business line. Kinney's farm processes fish waste, poultry waste, paper fibers and municipal biosolids. His compost is composed of, by volume, 25% fish, 50% sawdust and 25% other ingredients. Kinney uses an "active system" in his composting, a system which requires more labor but results in better quality compost at lesser time. The end product has a pH of about 6.4 with a NPK valued at 1-1-1.

Compositing developments in France

Article Abstract:

The French Environment and Energy Management Agency is launching a 10-year programme for compost and composting developments. The programme will be based on at least 10 pilot sites with each site having a major and a vital function to accomplish. Researchers associated with the reference pilot sites network will develop biotests, ecotoxicologic tests and other phytotoxicity tests. The basic goal is to gather information on management of diffused pollutants.
