One flew over the chicken coop: back-up plan adds value to facility delivery

Article Abstract:

Gold Kist Inc successfully brought its poultry processing plant in Sanford, NC, into compliance with the state's discharge requirements with the help of Crowder Construction Co and a host of specialty contractors. The construction project allowed the facility to dramatically reduced the levels of its biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). Currently, Gold Kist's Sanford facility serves as a large-scale activated sludge treatment model in the poultry industry in North Carolina.

Updated sewage system gives tourists a lift

Article Abstract:

Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District's new LS 1-26 lift station was designed to handle the increasing peak hourly flow (PHF) that is projected to reach 4,500 gpm, which is more than twice the pumping capacity of the old lift station. The new LS 1-26's design also specified three pumps with equal pumping capacities so that any two pumps will meet present PHF loads. The pumps selected were dry well/wet types.

Hydrogen sulfide control

Article Abstract:

The control of hydrogen sulfide in wastewater collection systems is possible with the use of a liquid-phase sulfide meter to monitor industrial discharges or through the application of chlorine to control odor. Hydrogen sulfide, which results from chemical reactions involving sulfur compounds, has been considered a public nuisance for its odor and corrosive potential as it oxidizes to sulfuric acid.
