Outside storage of wood chips

Article Abstract:

The pulp industry has undertaken many scientific studies into the decomposition of wood chips as a result of outside storage. These studies have produced information that is of interest to composting and mulching site operators. It has been established that the type of microorganisms present in piles of wood chips stored outside depends on the type of material present and on the prevailing temperature. In turn, temperature is determined by the type of material, the moisture content, the particle size, the location within the pile, the season when cut, the pile size and shape and the age when cut.

Waste diversion at correctional facility

Article Abstract:

The recycling and composting program at the Morgan County Regional Correctional Facility in Wartburg, Tennessee successfully recycles 77% of its wastes. The disposal tonnage dropped from about 65 tons in 1993 to 15 tons in 1996, thereby saving $1200 every month. Maximum recovery of dry recyclables is ensured. Food residuals comprise 60% of the diversion materials at the facility, which also receives food residuals from nearby jails and a nursing home. The Wartburg prison has become a role model for 22 other facilities in the state.
