Point of purchase recycling programs

Article Abstract:

The consensus throughout the US is that supermarkets are the ideal drop-off sites for recyclables in places where there are no curbside recycling programs. Some very successful companies such as King Soopers Inc. in Denver, CO,has been Practicing this since 1971. Kash n' Karry in Florida hasalso successfully put up drop-off centers despite initial objections from landlords Ralph's Grocery Co in California and Augsburger's Store in Indiana, are also experiencing increases in glass, metal, newspaper and plastic collections However, low market demands for end products still resulted in several closures.

Keys to curbside efficiency and performance

Article Abstract:

The incorporation of technological innovations into curbside collection of recyclables ensures cost effectivity. Trucks are operated for more hours of the day with fewer people. Ninety percent of the recycling trucks owned by Browning-Ferris Industries and Waste Management Inc. are of the low-entry, right-side drive type. Source separation in different truck compartments results in less residue at the processing site, leading to more recovery per ton of the material collected. Compaction increases the payload of each collection route, making collection more efficient.

Filling the gaps with dropoff recycling

Article Abstract:

Many municipalities continue to use a dropoff system until an infrastructure for a curbside program is finalized or when a curbside program is not feasible. Flagstaff, Arizona, owns five dropoff systems and aims to establish curbside recycling. Virginia Beach, VA has extended its dropoff system by acquiring more dropoff sites following the suspension of the curbside program in July, 1996. Southeast Colorado has the largest single recycling collection program in the US, and Montana plans to build such an extensive system.
