"Precision farming" can protect water quality

Article Abstract:

The use of global positioning system (GPS) technology can aid farmers in determining and applying the exact fertilizer needs of specific portions of their farms. Under the system, the entire farm is plotted on a grid and the soil quality in each grid is determined. The exact locations of these plots can be determined using GPS. During harvest time, the precise yield of each plot can be determined. Fertilizer application can then be automated to deliver precise amounts of fertilizer to each plot based on the yield statistics.
