Revitalizing the farm economy via renewable energy development

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on opportunities for generating renewable energy, such as biofuels, from agricultural and livestock industries. Sources include animal manure, crop residues, organic municipal wastes and forestry residues; biofuels produced include ethanol and the newer biodiesel, which is typically produced from oilseeds and wastes from edible oils.

Hurricane relief ship powered by renewable fuel

Article Abstract:

Biodiesel, which works in any diesel engine and also powers a military ship hired to transport food, water and relief supplies to hurricane affected area is presented. Biodiesel can be made from any fat or vegetable oil, and it works in any diesel engine and can be used in its pure form, or blended with diesel at any level.

The author differentiates between the concepts of renewable energy and biomass energy, which can be distinguished by the processes used to produce them. These differences include their impacts on soil and water quality, net energy output, net farm income, energy conservation, and food versus fuel production.
