Rescuing materials from landfills

Article Abstract:

The Institute for Local Self Reliance has published its report, 'Creating Wealth from Everyday Items,' which focused on four government and nine private institutions that engage in reuse operations. Statistics show that reuse operations create more jobs, incineration and landfilling than other conventional recycling firms. Some of these organizations include Habitat for Humanity ReUse Center, the National Surplus Exchange, the Reuse Market, Materials for the Arts, Metro Area Housing Program's EcoYouth Salvage, Creation Station and Urban Ore.

Processing C&D debris for markets

Article Abstract:

Central Construction & Demolition Recycling Inc succeeded in recycling 43% of the 87,038 tons of material received in the fiscal year to Jul 1998. It has around 300 customers, who usually pay a tipping fee of $30/ton. Its in-town site in Des Moines, IA, covers 23 acres, of which five are used for materials recycling. According to the commodity and market, low levels of some contaminants are allowable. Some materials are landfilled because of a lack of markets or because they cannot be cleaned up and recycled cost-effectively.
