Resource depletion and sustainability in small open economies

Article Abstract:

An open-economy model for nonrenewable resources was used to analyze the theoretical context of capital gain and economic depreciation of natural resources in closed economies, such as Indonesia. Analysis of 1971-1984 statistics on petroleum, timber and agricultural soil resources in Indonesia revealed that aside from Hotelling rent, capital gain investments from exogenous price variations must also be considered in determining the sustainability of resources. Accuracy of price forecasts also play substantial roles in establishing the rate of consumption level sustainability of resource-rich countries.
