SOME REASONS FOR HOPE

Article Abstract:

Prices of ferrous scrap fell in Mar 1999, negating price increases which occured in January and February. Scrap prices, however, are expected to improve in the coming months due to an agreement with the Russians that they will lessen steel exports to the US and higher duties exacted from Brazilian and Japanese steel. Other factors which should strengthen ferrous scrap prices are the continuing strength of the US economy together with the automotive and construction industries.

Scrap processors seek ways to maintain scrap flow

Article Abstract:

Ferrous scrap processors are going to great lengths to obtain needed supply amidst low scrap prices. With market conditions predicted to remain over the short term, many processors will be more hard pressed to look for supply and may be forced to reduce their operations. Some observers, however, are optimistic that recovery will happen soon enough due to the recent decline in the import of finished steel products.

A double whammy

Article Abstract:

Many ferrous scrap processors are suffering from falling ferrous scrap prices and increasing operating costs. One operator said he could not continue to operate on a price of $100 per ton coupled with weak demand. Another operator said demand was still acceptable but low prices were a problem. The low scrap prices was attributed to increasing imports of scrap, DRI and pig iron from other countries.
