Scrap joint venture formed at Sparrows Point

Article Abstract:

Sparrows Point Scrap Processing LLC (SPSP), a joint venture by AMG Resources Corp and Philip Metals Inc, has entered an agreement with Bethlehem Steel Corp for the design, construct, own and operate the latter's Sparrow Point Division scrap processing facility. Construction of the new Maryland $15-million scrap facility is slated to be finished in late summer 2000 and will process around 80,000 tons of scrap monthly.

Retail redemption

Article Abstract:

A pilot program of free-standing recycling redemption centers has been established by Tomra Pacific and its Tomra Recycling Network division. The recycling centers, called rePLANET, are located in supermarkets and accepts cans, bottles and newspapers in return for cash. Tomra intends to install three to five centers per week in southern California at Albertsons, Stater Bros and Ralphs supermarkets.

International outlook brightens

Article Abstract:

Ferrous metals traders and processors presented mixed views at the Spring 1999 Convention of the Bureau of International Recycling regarding the prospects of the industry in the coming years, noting the difficulty in equaling the high levels in the previous year. Simsmetal Ltd's John Crabb stressed that the worst is over for the Asian market and that FY 2000 will mark the market's recovery.
