Processing your way to wood markets

Article Abstract:

Three different wood processing operations are discussed to show that efficient and safe waste reduction requires a keen eye for detail and the readiness to adapt to the process most appropriate to one's operation. The Mecklenburg County Solid Waste Dept in North Carolina operates three wood processing facilities, two of which handle only brush and tree trimmings while the third handles clean pallets. On the other hand, W D Zwicky and Sons accepts brush, lumber, feedstocks and tree trimmings to be turned into compost, while the Davis Street Station for Material Recycling and Transfer uses a hopper and a conveyor for a more modern type of waste reduction.

Wood recycling firms shift markets

Article Abstract:

Apollo Wood Recovery in Fontana, CA, handles 6,000 tons a month of medium density fibreboard (MDF). It has gained a large contract with CanFibre, which has developed a facility in nearby Riverside, CA, to produce MDF, and will supply almost all the wood required by this plant. Apollo still needs the boiler fuel market, and continues to collect wood from generators, regardless of whether CanFibre needs it or not. Alternative Energy LLC in Nashville, TN, produces both mulch and bulking agent for biosolids composting. It uses a two-stage grinding operation to produce both of these products. It plans to begin producing coloured mulch in 2000.

Municipal composter expands as wood processor

Article Abstract:

The compost facility in Islip, New York began in 1988, handling over 20,000 tons of grass clippings a year. It now handles wood residuals integrated with the yard trimmings program, rather than developing a separate system to process the wood. It has recently acquired a wood shear to reduce stumps to a size that can be processed. The wood is then aged for around six months, and the main market for the mulch is landscapers.
