Shredded tire market options

Article Abstract:

The most significant end use for shredded scrap tires in the US is tire derived fuel, but civil engineering applications offer the most growth potential. So far, not all states have recognized the benefits of using tire shreds. However, some states are identifying more projects in which tire shreds can be used. In southern California and the San Francisco/Sacramento area, rubberized asphalt is being used for roads. Two other expanding markets for shredded tires are playgrounds and soil amendments.

Tire chips bolster canal levee

Article Abstract:

The California Integrated Waste Management Board has funded a $380,000 scheme to use chips from more than 46,000 waste tyres to build a reinforcing wall in a flood control levee of Feather River. The California State University-Chico College of Engineering's Construction Management Dept is managing the four-phase scheme. Tyre chips have been mixed in a slurry with cement, soil and bentonite, providing considerable resistance to the strength of floodwaters and preventing water seepage.

Innovative uses for whole tires

Article Abstract:

An increasing number of rubber tires are being recycled in a range of waste management applications. Tire derived fuel production accounted for 140 million tires in 1997. Applications including artificial reefs, slope stabilizers and bumper boats all utilize whole tires. Manufacturing organization Durable Corporation recycles 208,000 tires per annum.
