Static piles succeed as 'downer' cattle disposal option

Article Abstract:

USDA secretary Ann Vaneman banned 'downer' cattle from the human food supply in December 2003 after the discovery of downer cow infected with mad cow disease or BSE. According to Jean Bonhotal, a composting specialist, to send downer cattle to render plants already became more costly because of the decline in prices and demand for tallow, bone meal and other commodities produced from carcasses.
