The effects of hazardous waste taxes on waste generation and disposal

Article Abstract:

Results of a study examining the effects of state taxation of chlorinated solvent waste on waste generation and disposal show that the amount of solvent waste generated may react elastically to shifts in incineration expenses. However, the general consequence of present state hazardous waste taxes in the US is minimal because the taxes make up only a small portion of total waste management costs. Findings also reveal that the taxes motivate generators to select treatment over land disposal.

Liability funding and Superfund clean-up remedies

Article Abstract:

Less complex remedies for cleaning up contaminated sites were selected where Potentially Responsible Parties (PRPs) are expected to handle a substantial amount of the cost. On the other hand, treatment remedies, which generate a more permanent result, are more often used where there are no PRPs involved and taxes shoulder the cost. Furthermore, the use of liability funding is dependent upon whether the clean-up costs are higher than the risks they want to control.
