Tree farm evolves into a compost business

Article Abstract:

Rick Duerr, founder and owner of South Gouldsboro, ME's Downeast Organics, used to grow and retail Christmas trees before he discovered the benefits of composting seaweed and fish to boost soil fertility. Recycling fish residuals was an idea that first came to Duerr in 1994 when he was asked by Stinson Seafood Co to help it recycle fish individuals as its herring renderings were rapidly getting spoiled. By forming windrows of sawdust and adding up fish by-products incrementally, Duerr discovered that a type of compost that bolsters soil fertility is produced.
