Tropical forest protection: an empirical analysis of the costs borne by local people

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the valuation of tropical forest resources for a rural population in Africa. A willingness-to-accept format was used to estimate welfare losses from land-use restrictions associated with a newly established national park in Madagascar. The results suggest that contingent valuation can be successfully applied to rural households within the developing country context. The results also indicate the existence of a systematic link between various socioeconomic variables of interest and the expressed willingness-to-accept compensation for foregone land use.

Environmental legislation and enforcement: a voting model under asymmetric information

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the effects of asymmetric voter information on environmental policies of democratic governments. A model is presented as a framework for thestudy. The model consists of a simplified economy of two goods. Results indicate that, although there is legislation to protect the environment, there may be little enforcement of these laws, if an incumbent has control over enforcement.

Economic growth and environmental protection

Article Abstract:

A study that examined the 'new' benefit-cost analysis has discovered that a greater quantity of natural environments can be preserved in the issue of reconciling the desire to develop economically and preserve natural resources. The development of the environment can be a form of capital, thus nullifying the optimal exhaustion of natural environments results of another theory.
