Yard trimmings diversion in Christchurch

Article Abstract:

The City Council of Christchurch, New Zealand, has successfully implemented a waste management strategy involving yard trimming composting with a goal to reducing landfilling material by 25%. The net value of the project is 9.33 million NZ dollars and the internal rate of return is 11.42%. The gardens in Christchurch contribute grass, prunings, and leafy vegetation as yard trimmings. The total processing time from organics to compost is 4 to 5 months. A 4.4 acre windrow composting facility is located in the Eastern Refuse Transfer Station, Bromley.

Ten years of yard trimmings diversion in Vancouver

Article Abstract:

The city of Vancouver, British Columbia, initiated a composting programme in 1989, with distribution of backyard compost bins beginning in 1990. More than 25,000 backyard composters have now been distributed among around 90,000 single-family households. A $2.5 million expansion of Vancouver's leaf composting facility ensured that residents have convenient access to yard trimmings composting. Throughput at this facility reached 27,500 metric tons in 1998, and compost sales reached 25,000 cu mt in 1999.

There are over 3,200 yard trimmings composting facilities in the US. It is imperative that the operators of such facilities be familiar with the more commonly employed materials-handling and site management techniques. Among the more important details that operators should attend to are feedstock weight and volume characteristics, moisture content, site capacity and layout, dust control, storage and curing areas and noise reduction techniques.
