'Asian Drama': The pursuit of modernization in India and Indonesia

Article Abstract:

The tension played out, within the modern project in the context of India and Indonesia are discussed. India's tragedy was that if it had pursued better policies earlier, it could have had faster growth and faster reduction in policy while Indonesia's tragedy was that it did so well for so long in terms of economic development but then threw away the opportunity for continued rapid growth through the political failures of the late General Suharto presidency.

Hong Kong: ten years on

Article Abstract:

Lord Wilson's anniversary address to the Society tells not only about the building of Hong Kong ten years back since 1997 but to the lead up to 1997 as it was important to get into perspective what was happening and why it happened. Despite all the difficulties Hong Kong has not just survived but flourished and has more control over its economic and financial affairs than do many members of the European Union.
