Chitral centennial: the Society's 1995 tour to Northern Pakistan

Article Abstract:

The Royal Society for Asian Affairs undertook a tour of Chitral, Northern Pakistan, in 1995, to commemorate the centenary of the Siege of Chitral by Lieutenant Colonel James Kelly. Kelly's heroic march to relieve the besieged forces of Surgeon-Major Robertson at the Chitral fort is one of the great events in Victorian military history. A garrison at Mardan was also mobilized under Major-General Robert Low. The delegation reached Chitral from Gilgit through the Shandur Pass and followed the route via south to Mardan along the Lowari and Malakand passes.

Article Abstract:

Pakistan has avoided the global trend toward democracy and vacillated between military and civil rule. This has led to chronic corruption, military consumption of half the nation's budget, and inability of the military to engage in warfare.
