Banking on tomorrow - what are we teaching them today?

Article Abstract:

A 1991 examination that assesses the extent of consumer knowledge of high school seniors all over the US shows that these teenagers are ill-prepared for making vital purchasing decisions in their lives subsequent to their high school graduation. A total of 428 high school seniors participated in the nationwide test conducted by the Psychological Corp for the Consumer Federation of America and American Express Travel Related Services Company Inc in shopping malls across the US. Teenagers were able to correctly answer only 42% of the multiple-choice test which was composed of 52 questions. The highest scores were registered for general knowledge questions on consumer credit and for computational and reasoning aptitude. Low scores were registered for questions concerning credit (at 38%), savings and checking accounts (36%) and automobile insurance (40%).
