Federal markets: Why small firms can't do their part

Article Abstract:

A new report, sponsored by Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, New York, queries whether small business will reap any gains from the U.S. government's reponse to terrorism. This response includes, boosted security, military spending and an economic stimulus package. The report states that this will be the first time in seven years, that federal government agencies has not met any of its goals for doing business with small business. The article provides additional information on the report and also includes a table listing the Defense Department Contracts to SDBs (Small Disadvantaged Businesses) for the years 1997, 1999 and 2000.

Growth amid uncertainty

Article Abstract:

The theme discussed at the 2001 MED Week, a national convention of minority entrepreneurs, was Strategies for Growth in the American Economy. MED (Minority Enterprise Development) participants discussed business expansion, as well as the reality of economic and global strife. Don Evans, United States Commerce Secretary, spoke on TPA (trade promotion authority), as well as the Bush administration's budget for a restructured MBDA (Minority Business Development Agency) Web site.
