In anxious celebration: Lewis Hine's 'Men at Work.'

Article Abstract:

Lewis Hine's book of photographs entitled 'Men at Work' presents conflicting visions of working men in control of machinery and in danger of being destroyed by industrial capitalism. However, the note of danger is subsumed within the more affirmative view. Hine depicts a worker's utopia by omitting the figure of the boss and emphasizes the wholeness and intelligence of the worker in his final image, which shows the head of a worker at rest, wearing glasses and smiling. The photographs were taken during the construction of the Empire State Building and published in 1932.

A not so urgent issue

Article Abstract:

The Urgent Issues Task Force was created by the Financial Reporting Council to deal with accounting matters. One such issue is how companies should account for the interest on bonds that may be converted to stocks under put options. This is no longer an urgent issue, but the Task Force has released a ruling that would impose a 12% interest charge on the profit and loss account, whether or not the bonds are converted. The ruling, therefore, makes issuing convertible bonds with put options unattractive for many companies.

Democratic turbulence

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the 2000 elections in Ghana, which some feel will be devoid of corruption, intimidation and vote rigging. President Jerry Rawlings has stepped down, which leads some observers to conclude that the democratic processes will be allowed to unfold unobstructed.
