Indiscipline and indigestion: a reply to Whitten and Whitten

Article Abstract:

Dorothea and Norman Whitten's response to a review of their book 'Imagery and Creativity: Ethnoaesthetics and Art Worlds in the Americas' implied substantive differences between what the Whittens wrote in their book and the review's interpretation of their work. However, the differences may be less substantive than the Whittens imply. Notwithstanding these differences, the Whittens should be congratulated for the excellence of the nine essays included in their book.

The discourse of contrast in Foi: a reply to Kulick

Article Abstract:

Don Kulick criticizes the book 'The Empty Place: Space and Being Among the Foi of Papua New Guinea' for its flawed analysis of Foi maleness and femaleness. Kulick also decries the allegedly contrastive generalizations presented in the book. Although the book has its shortcomings, the accusation that it makes contrastive generalizations is untrue. Moreover, there are no grounds for the assertion that the book's analysis of Foi maleness and femaleness is flawed.

Reply to Yanagisako and Collier

Article Abstract:

The role of gender in marriage-death relationships only serves to strengthen the importance of marriage. Gender is a mere effect of marriage and not significant in distinguishing between male and female deaths. In AIDS studies, marriage should be given attention because it is more socially accepted than mere friendship. Study of friendship cannot have weight on AIDS research unless discussed in relation to marriage.
