Macau: past, present and future

Article Abstract:

Macau was the first Chinese port city to fall under European colonial rulers. It became an important hub for the exchange of trade and culture between China and Europe, particularly Portugal. It also played a significant part in the spread of Christianity in China. In 1999, Macau will revert to the Chinese after centuries of Portuguese sovereignty. The Chinese government has committed to enforcing a 50-year transition period wherein the Macau's capitalist economy and self-government shall be preserved.
