Rivera believes that affirmative-action programs helped him to become successful in broadcasting, but he does not support affirmative-action policies. He believes he has become successful in spite of racial discrimination, and minorities comprise 40% of his production staff.

The National Minority Supplier Development Council board has postponed a vote on whether to alter the definition of a minority-owned firm. The change has been opposed by the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and other groups.
