The Second Asia-Europe Summit and the ASEM process

Article Abstract:

The Second Asia-Europe Summit, which took place in London, England, in 1998, was regarded as successful in Asia, according to Foreign and Commonwealth Office Director for South and Southeast Asia Hilary Synnott. It is believed in Asia that the Second Asia-Europe Summit has acted as a driving force for the ASEM process, ensuring that this process will move towards the next Summit in South Korea in 2000. It is clear that Europe must be aware of the challenges faced by Asian countries, while Asian countries need to know that Europe is willing to assist.

Asia: Rich in problems and prospects

Article Abstract:

The devaluation of the Thai currency on July 2 1997 provoked a barrage of devaluations across Asia, including the Philippine peso, the Malaysian ringgit, and the Indonesian rupiah. In just over two months ASEAN currencies were down 20% on the US dollar. Intervention by the International Monetary Fund failed to turn the situation round and the financial crisis moved on to South Korea. The role and strategy of the portfolio during the crisis is examined, along with an overview of its current status and prospects.
