The United Nations: peacekeeping and the Middle East

Article Abstract:

UN peacekeeping in the Middle East has changed since 1948, when for the first time it sent unarmed peacekeepers to keep a watch on the Arab-Israel conflict. The Suez affair in 1956 was the first armed mission of the UN for peacekeeping, which replaced the British and French forces. The UN failed to prevent the 1967 Arab War because the Soviet Union stalled any move that was critical to Egypt. Then the UN activism appeared in the form of UN Security Council Resolution 242. After that the US opposed activity against Israel. The cost of seventeen peacekeeping operations is equal to 0.38% of the US defence budget.
