The vibrancy of American Studies in Britain amid exaggerated reports of its decline and the developments that affect the current study of American culture in Britain is traced. American Studies is currently in a state of flux indicating the field's responsiveness to shifting perspectives and emphasis which is radically altered by a reconsideration of gender, ethnicity and class as well as the nature and purpose of interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary studies and matters of education and administrative policy

The drama of colonialism: National identity and the construction of the Indian/Other in early 19th century American plays

Article Abstract:

An insight into the American nation's denial and deep-seated fears of its own inextricably multicultural identity at the time of the American Revolution and the first half of the 19th century is provided. The way the dominant white society's narcissistic view of itself as an empire operating under the auspices of Divine Providence actually resulted in a series of political acts of nativist violence is portrayed and 19th century dramatic literature is used for this purpose.
