A commentary on prime numbers and life cycles of periodical cicadas

Article Abstract:

Two similar models of periodical cicada evolution have a number of differences. Among these differences are those that pertain to mechanisms of cicada mortality as well as the maintenance of emergence synchrony and periodicity. While both models assume that the length of life cycles is affected by cooler temperatures of Pleistocene glacial stades, the probabilistic model is less speculative since it exhibits greater congruence with the climatic features of glacial stades within deciduous refugia and with phenologies of nymphal development in the species.
