What is an Arab?

Article Abstract:

Arabs and Arab society have characteristics that distinguish them from other nationalities and races. The three most prominent features of Arabs and Arab society are a constant awareness of an Arab identity, the importance of Islam and their immense pride in the Arabic language, which they consider a divine language. Among the weaknesses of the Arab world, on the other hand, are a general absence of free speech which has spawned a reluctance to tell the truth, an excessive respect for authority and rigorous self-examination, as well as ineffective administration, which stems from the fact that Arab society puts family and friends before duty to the community or state.

Combating extremism and the challenge of security in the Middle East

Article Abstract:

The views and ideas about the serious problems with extremism in the Middle East which threatens to unseat governments and have killed plenty of innocent people in the past few years are reported. The distorted facts that the media are selling to the American public, portraying the Muslim as the enemy and the Arab as a threat is the reason behind the conflict between the USA and the Arab and the Muslim world which is driving more Muslims into the arms of extremist groups.

Arab society: Characteristics and contradictions

Article Abstract:

The characteristics and contradictions of Arab society based on anecdotes are outlined in a speech delivered on the occasion of the Sir David Gore-Booth Memorial Lecture on 25th October 2006. Some of the contradictions are the present attitudes and actions of Hamas and Hizbullah, Arab nationalism or the aspiration to unite all Arabs in a single community, and the most conspicuous characteristic of Arab society being hostility to the West especially the United States.
