Adolescent birth intentions, social disadvantage, and behavioral outcomes

Article Abstract:

Researchers have considered the extent to which normative differences in fertility intentions influence group differentials in early nonmarital childbearing. This work used information obtained from the US National Longitudinal Surveys of Labor Market Experience of Youth. It was found that fertility goals do not explain why certain social groups are more likely than others to experience early or nonmarital births. Differences in early and nonmarital childbearing are a reflection of social disadvantage, as children from disadvantaged backgrounds are at greater risk at an earlier age.

The relationship of childhood sexual abuse to teenage pregnancy

Article Abstract:

A study investigated if sexual abuse during childhood resulted in higher risk for teenage pregnancy. An analysis of the sexual histories of 2,003 young women demonstrated that sexual abuse in itself was not linked to the rate of teenage pregnancy. However, sexual precocity, singly or in tandem with sexual abuse, was connected to greater teenage pregnancy incidences. The significant predictors of teenage pregnancy identified were social class, age at first coitus, ethnicity, non-use of birth control at first sex, and sexually abusive boyfriend.
