An intergenerational examination of patterns of individual and family adjustment

Article Abstract:

A model relating parents' experiences of family origin, parents' marital adjustment and parents' psychosocial adjustment to teenagers' experiences of their family of origin was developing by applying a multigenerational-systemic model of individual and family development. Findings indicated initial and limited agreement with the suggested model. Apparently, teenagers' experiences in their families of origin are indirectly connected to parents' experiences in their families of origin through mothers' psychosocial maturity and marital adjustment.

Marital dissatisfaction, psychological distress, and the coping of parents of pediatric cancer patients

Article Abstract:

The marital happiness of 124 parents of pediatric cancer patients was studied in connection with their psychological stress and coping preferences over a year. Findings revealed that there was a substantial rise in marital discontentment for the group as a whole. Marital displeasure was substantially and positively related to psychological distress at six and 12 months, but not at diagnosis. Fathers were apparently more self-oriented when they appraised the quality of their marriage.

Traumatic events and marital well-being

Article Abstract:

Past traumatic events can have a negative impact on marital well-being, but spousal support can influence the nature of this negative effect. People with a history of physical attack tend to undergo marital disharmony and dissatisfaction, especially for those with below average spousal support. Specific negative life events such as death of a child and a life-threatening illness also tend to have long term effects on the present marital state.
