Assisting young, unmarried mothers to become self-sufficient: the effects of different types of early economic support

Article Abstract:

Different sources of public and private financial supports help young, unmarried mothers to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Economic assistance helps such women to pursue education, find an eligible partner, and give birth to more children. Child support, food stamps, and economic aid from welfare programs such as Aid to Families with Dependent Children are the traditional methods of income support. However, relatives and shared housing provide additional help. Marriage is insufficient as a long-term solution to help unwed mothers in attaining self-sufficiency.

Marital quality and conflict across the transition to parenthood in African American and White couples

Article Abstract:

White and African-American couples show an increase in frequency of conflict and a decrease in marital happiness, following their transition to parenthood. Unlike African-American spouses, White spouses are significantly less happy after becoming parents. Both African-American and White childless couples reveal less marital tension than that of the new parents. The root cause of the conflict is the problem over decisions and roles each would play.
